The fast-casual chain, which styles itself as “Texas’ No. 1 Burrito,” has further plans to double its locations in the next five years. The majority of the new restaurants will be infill locations across the Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio markets, with additional stores spread across the state.

“As we execute upon our vision to become the largest, most loved burrito chain in Texas, we are evolving our restaurants to create the best experience for our tribe and guests” Alex Eagle, CEO of Freebirds World Burrito, recently said. “Our new prototype is easily scalable and adaptable which means we can bring our craveable and endlessly customizable burritos and bowls to even more communities across Texas.”

The new prototype restaurant will debut this year with new interiors and exteriors, as well as an updated brand logo and design guidelines. They will mostly be freestanding or end cap locations between 1,500 and 3,500 sq ft. The restaurants feature a large deck roof, covered outdoor patio, and direct paths inside for access to registers and mobile pickup stations. Many locations will also feature drive-thru service.

Freebirds World Burrito first opened in Santa Barbara, California in 1987 before breaking into the Texas market with a College Station location. The company is now based out of Austin and began franchising in 2012. The chain currently has 16 locations around the Greater Houston Area with more to come soon.
