The company was founded in 2003 by long time friends Kenneth “Cat Daddy” Pogson and Tres Shannon. According to Voodoo Doughnut’s website, the initial downtown Portland location offered “a mix of the classic and the unconventional.” Voodoo Doughnut opened its second location in 2008. The company now operates in six U.S. states and one Canadian province. They now offer more than 50 flavors including vegan options.

As the chain has grown in prominence, they have appeared on The Travel Channel, The Cooking Channel, and MTV, among many other media outlets. Over its years, the chain has developed a bit of a cult following as well. Their first Houston location reportedly caused traffic jams when it first opened.

The new location is expected to cause a stir as well. Chris Schultz, the CEO of Voodoo Doughnut, recently said, “What makes the growth the most exciting is the ability to hire 70 folks from the local community and providing competitive wages, affordable health care and liberal PTO in an environment where no nametags or uniforms are required. Our teams are as unique as our doughnuts.”

What Now Houston reached out to Schultz for further comment but has not heard back from him as of publishing time.
