Prego, a cornerstone in the community for Italian cuisine enthusiasts, announces its relocation to 5515 Kelvin Dr Suite 130, signaling a new era under the stewardship of David Cook, the restaurant’s passionate owner. With a rich history that began in 1983 when it was opened by a chef, Prego became a household name and has flourished through several transitions, including a change of ownership in the late ’80s/early ’90s.

David Cook’s journey with Prego is nothing short of inspirational. Starting as a server in 2001, he ascended to general manager by 2008 and then to partner in 2013, before taking over as the sole owner in 2020. “I really fell in love with the industry and Prego,” Cook recalls, reflecting on his two-decade affiliation with the establishment.

The move comes after Rice University, the owner of the building housing Prego, announced redevelopment plans. True to Cook’s commitment to the restaurant’s legacy and its clientele, the new location was chosen for its proximity to the original—transitioning from a former Talbot’s store to a vibrant dining space just across the parking lot. The relocation is more than a change of address; it’s a revival of the Prego spirit with a refreshed design that pays homage to its heritage.

Prego’s relocation is creating a buzz among its dedicated patrons and the wider community, eager to see their favorite dining spot thrive in a new setting. The upcoming space will introduce a twist to the dining experience, focusing on family-style and shareable plates while retaining the classic dishes Prego is renowned for. All current services and offerings will remain the same, but executed in a more efficient way.

Cook has orchestrated a series of celebratory events to mark the restaurant’s transition, encouraging followers to stay updated via social media (Facebook and Instagram) for a series of farewell dinners at the old location and launch celebrations at the new venue. The legacy of Prego is also carried by its long-term staff, with many serving for over a decade, embodying the restaurant’s commitment to familiarity and quality.

With a forward-looking expansion mindset, Cook is navigating Prego towards its future with hints of integrating the brand further into the community and a possible second location. But for now he targets the grand opening of the new location for mid-2024, ensuring a seamless transition with no interruption to service. It’s not just a relocation for Prego but a step towards broadening its horizons, reinforcing its place in the hearts of those it serves.
